Fall Comfort Foods at Shady Maple Smorgasbord

When the crisp autumn air rolls in, there’s nothing better than the warm, familiar flavors of comfort food. At Shady Maple Smorgasbord, fall means bringing back homestyle dishes that remind our guests of family dinners and cozy meals at grandma’s table.

We recently sat down with Summer Smith, Director of Food Services, who shared some of the delicious fall favorites featured on our buffet this season. From hearty roasts to pumpkin treats, here’s a taste of what you can enjoy now through the end of the year.

Homestyle Meats That Feel Like Home

Turkey and ham are among the most-requested dishes year-round, and fall is the perfect time to feature them in all their glory.

  • Roasted Turkey – Oven-roasted, sliced, and served fresh on the buffet.

  • Hickory Roasted Ham – Tender and smoky, served sliced to perfection.

  • Applewood Smoked Carved Ham – Carved right off the grill for a rich, savory flavor.

And of course, no Pennsylvania Dutch-style meal would be complete without Shady Maple’s Original Filling — a recipe passed down from our founders that combines potato filling and bread filling for a one-of-a-kind side dish.

Sweet Potato Favorites

Sweet potatoes are a fall classic, and at Shady Maple, we make them in two comforting ways:

  • Baked Jumbo Yams – Thick-sliced, then topped with butter, brown sugar, and syrup.

  • Sweet Potato Bake – Mashed sweet potatoes baked with a buttery brown sugar and pecan crust.

These sides pair perfectly with turkey and ham, giving you that true homestyle holiday feel.

Pumpkin Season at Shady Maple

For many of our guests, fall isn’t complete without pumpkin. That’s why from October through November, we highlight a variety of pumpkin specialties, all made fresh in-house:

  • Pumpkin Pie – Fresh from our bakery daily.

  • Pumpkin Ice Cream – Creamy and seasonal.

  • Pumpkin Pancakes – A breakfast favorite that tastes like fall on a plate.

A Taste of Lancaster County Tradition

To wash it all down, guests can enjoy local apple cider from Kaufmann’s, a Lancaster County favorite. This cider is served from September through the end of the year, adding the perfect crisp, sweet finish to your fall meal.

Shady Maple Bakery: How Pumpkin Cream Cheese Pies Are Made for Thanksgiving

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Pie is a Thanksgiving favorite at Shady Maple Bakery. Each pie starts with a rich pumpkin filling and a swirl of sweet cream cheese, then bakes to perfection for a creamy, spiced dessert. At home, you can recreate this treat by combining pumpkin puree, sugar, egg, and spices for the base, adding a cream cheese mixture on top, and baking at 360°F before finishing at 300°F. It’s the perfect blend of classic pumpkin flavor and velvety cream cheese for your holiday table.
