“I’m Tim Dinger. I’m the bakery director at Shady Maple Farm Market. We’re getting ready for our annual Whoopie Pie Celebration.”
Tim has been with Shady Maple for 38 years, and his love for baking—and for whoopie pies—hasn’t faded. Year after year, our bakery team pours their heart into making these Pennsylvania Dutch favorites from scratch, and this week, you’ll get to taste the results.
From Wednesday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., our semiannual Whoopie Pie Celebration returns with more flavors, more excitement, and more chances to indulge. (Remember: we’re closed on Sundays.)
From Scratch, From the Heart
“We are currently working on preparing whoopie pie blanks. The first step is to create the base with cake scraps, which are cut from our own handmade cakes from the bakery,” Tim explains.
At Shady Maple, nothing is outsourced—we do it all in-house. “We do everything from making the batter for the whoopie pies, to icing or fillings that are used in all the varieties we offer. And for our Whoopie Pie Celebration, we will have over 45 flavors.”
This year’s lineup includes classics like chocolate with vanilla filling, along with adventurous flavors such as maple bacon. New creations—German chocolate, Black Forest, and peanut butter-on-peanut butter—are ready to surprise your taste buds.
A Bakery That Never Stops
As Tim puts it, “As we go through the hectic times here at the holidays, the employees here—most of them are long term—and they’re used to it. Everyone knows what to expect, and it’s a different level of chaos. But everyone steps up and we do what needs done and we get the product out.”
That dedication is what makes this event possible. Our bakers begin preparations months in advance, arriving before dawn to mix, bake, fill, and package by hand. For the celebration alone, they create thousands of extra whoopie pies on top of their regular workload.
